Today I ran at Colney Heath School in the District League. I was really excited because this was my first District League race of the year, and I was proud to be running as the vice-captain. I wanted to show that I could do well and help my team.
The course was three laps, so I knew it was important to get a good start. I tried hard at the beginning, but I didn’t get the start I wanted. Because of that, I had to work harder during the race to move up into the front positions.
For most of the race I kept pushing and trying to stay close to the leaders. I knew I had more to give and that I needed to make my move earlier. With about 300 metres to go, I should have been in the lead, but instead I waited too long.
I finally took the lead with about 100 metres left before the finish line. It felt great to move in front, but I know if I had gone earlier, I could have made the race a bit easier for myself and finished stronger.
When I crossed the finish line, I was completely exhausted. I had pushed so hard at the end that I started to feel really sick, and I ended up throwing up. It wasn’t fun, but it showed me I gave everything I had in the race.
This first league race has taught me a lot. Next time I want to make sure I get a faster start and take the lead earlier. I’m proud that I still managed to finish strongly, and I’m even more motivated to do better in the next races.
