U12 District League at Fleetville 15th OCTOBER 2026

Today, I competed in the Under 12 District League race hosted at Fleetville School. This was the second district league event of the season, and after winning the first race at Coney Hall back in September, I was completely determined to hold onto my top spot in the standings. The race was advertised as a 1.2km distance, which was meant to be roughly three and a bit laps around the school fields. Standing on the start line, I felt focused, ready, and eager to deliver another strong performance for my school team.

When the whistle sounded, I broke away smoothly from the pack and managed to establish myself in the lead early on. However, during the very first lap, there was a bit of confusion on the course when some runners slowed down in front of me. I made sure to stay composed, adjusted my stride, and pushed straight past the congestion to rebuild my momentum. Once I was clear ahead, I settled into a solid, aggressive rhythm and gradually built up a comfortable gap over the rest of the field.

The biggest drama happened at the end of the second lap! As I crossed the finish line to begin what I believed was my third lap, officials suddenly called out to me, telling me that the race was actually over and that I needed to turn back. I had already run past the gantry, so I had to stop, turn around, and run back across the line to finish properly. Even though that slight course mix-up cost me a few valuable seconds, I still crossed the line convincingly in first place to take the win.

Looking at my GPS watch afterwards, it logged a total distance of just 0.73km rather than the official 1.2km. There seemed to be a mix-up with the lap count, as older races were running three and a half laps while our race was stopped after two and a half laps. I am pretty sure the course was meant to be the full three and a half laps to reach the right distance! Despite the confusion, I managed an average pace of 3 minutes and 47 seconds per kilometre, which was solid enough to secure victory.

I am incredibly proud to take first place again and bring home maximum points for my school. It was also wonderful to see my teammates running so brilliantly and pushing hard in their own races. Our main goal as a squad this year is to defend our title and lift the overall District League Trophy just like we did last season. Every single point counts towards that team goal, so keeping my winning streak alive feels extra special.

Overall, despite the route confusion and the unexpected turn-around at the finish, it was another fantastic outing for our school cross-country team. Crossing the line first proves that staying focused through unexpected moments pays off in racing! Now, I’m looking forward to training hard over the coming weeks and getting ready to give it my all in the next district league fixture
