U12 DISTRICT LEAGUE AT WHEATFIELDS 5TH NOVEMBER 2026

Today I took part in the District League competition at Wheatfields Junior School, where I ran a 1.3 km race. The course was 3½ laps, and we were meant to finish on the fourth lap to complete the distance. I was feeling really excited and confident because I wanted to run as fast as possible. My dad had set me a target of running at 3 minutes and 45 seconds per kilometre. Of course, I wanted to win the race too, but I was also determined to get as close to my target as possible. I felt strong and believed I could do it!

As soon as the race started, I managed to get into the lead, but then a very tall girl overtook me. She was running incredibly fast, at around 3 minutes and 15 seconds per kilometre. I knew that this was a very quick pace and that it might be difficult for her to keep it going for the whole race. I stayed calm and carried on running at my own pace. After about 150 metres, she started to slow down, and I managed to zoom past her and take the lead again. I felt really happy and was determined not to let anyone catch me!

By the end of the first lap, I had built up a comfortable lead, and the gap between me and the other runners was getting bigger and bigger. I kept pushing myself and tried to maintain a really good speed. The second lap went just as well, and I was still feeling strong. I concentrated on my running and made sure I did not slow down. When I finished the third lap, I could see the rest of the runners further ahead of me, and I realised that I was getting close to the back of the field.

As I started the fourth lap, something really exciting happened. I began overtaking lots of runners who were further ahead on the course. I had never really experienced this in a race before, and it made me feel amazing! I decided to push even harder and started sprinting past as many runners as I could. I felt like I had so much energy left and my legs were still feeling really strong. I kept going until I crossed the finish line in a comfortable first place. I was absolutely delighted with my performance!

My finishing time was 4 minutes and 23 seconds, with an average pace of 3 minutes and 47 seconds per kilometre. This was incredibly close to the target of 3 minutes and 45 seconds that my dad had set for me. I was really pleased because I had almost achieved it! I also felt that I could have carried on running for even longer because I still had plenty of energy. The course was meant to be 1.3 km, but it turned out to be slightly shorter at 1.16 km. Even so, I was very happy with how I had performed and how much effort I had put into the race.

I was also extremely proud of my school teammates because they all did brilliantly. One of my friends in my year managed to finish in an amazing fourth place, another friend came eighth, and a fantastic girl from the year below finished in 11th place. It was wonderful to see so many people from my school doing so well. Everyone worked really hard, and I was really proud of our school’s overall performance. It made the day even more special because we were all supporting each other and doing our best.

This victory means that I have now won all three of the District League races I have taken part in this year, with two more races still to come. I am really determined to try and win the remaining two races as well. However, my biggest goal is to keep improving my speed. I think my endurance is one of my strengths because I do regular long runs, but speed is something I really want to work on. These shorter races are brilliant preparation for my bigger competitions because they allow me to push myself, run faster and discover what I am capable of achieving.

Overall, it was a fantastic day, and I am really happy with how everything went. I achieved another first place, came very close to my target pace and felt stronger than ever. I was also delighted to see my school teammates doing so well and supporting one another. Winning three District League races is a brilliant feeling, but I know there is still more I can improve. I am going to keep training hard, working on my speed and giving every race my very best. I cannot wait for the next competition!
